<p>At least five people are dead and five more have been injured after an Amazon cargo plane crashed and ran off the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon.</p>
<p>“At approximately 1:58 p.m. this afternoon, a cargo plane crashed at Miami International Airport as it overran runway number 30,” Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz stated in a press conference after the initial news broke. “It came to rest in a field adjacent to the airport. At this time, we can confirm that we have at least five deceased individuals, and we have multiple individuals that were transported to local hospitals with unknown injuries.”</p>
<p>The Boeing 767-300 is an Amazon cargo plane that flew from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was operated by 21 Air, according to an Amazon spokesperson. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the Federal Aviation Administration has sent inspectors to investigate the crash.</p>
<p>“More than 60 units and approximately 200 firefighters responded to the scene,” Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue’s official X page reported. “Upon arrival, they found the aircraft outside the airport’s operational area, engulfed in flames and producing a large amount of smoke. The firefighters tackled a complex fire in the engine compartment and used foam from specialized airport fire units to extinguish it. They also conducted search and rescue operations, and located and assessed patients throughout the incident zone.” There is no further threat to the public, fire rescue also stated.</p>
<p>“My heart is with all of the families who were affected and to everyone who is grieving tonight, and we are also praying for the injured and their families,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at the press conference. “And I want to thank all the men and women of our fire rescue team, of our sheriff’s office, I want to thank all the first responders. Our fire rescue team was there within seconds of the crash, so we are deeply grateful for everything that they have done and always do.”</p>
<p>Levine Cava also mentioned that her office is “learning more about what happened” and will continue to update the public when further information is confirmed.</p>
