Fireworks Explosion in Central Mexico Results in 10 Deaths and 64 Injuries

TEMASCALCINGO, Mexico (AP) — An explosion of pyrotechnic material occurred during a festival for a patron saint in Temascalcingo, Mexico State, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 individuals and injuring another 64, according to Mexican authorities. The incident took place on Saturday night near the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church, where hundreds were gathered to watch a fireworks display that is part of a religious celebration. Temascalcingo is located approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Mexico City. The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, and the Mexico State Attorney General's Office has initiated an investigation. Among the injured are two priests, as reported by a local bishop. A video circulating on social media depicts the aftermath of the explosion, showing individuals navigating through smoke and debris in search of survivors. Explosions related to pyrotechnics are not uncommon in Mexico, where fireworks are often utilized in street celebrations and religious festivals. In a similar incident nearly four years ago, a fireworks explosion in a village in the municipality of Huejutla, Hidalgo, resulted in 17 injuries.
