Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes at Miami International Airport, Causing Runway Closures

MIAMI (AP) — An Amazon cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, striking multiple vehicles and catching fire. The incident sent thick black smoke into the sky and led to the closure of all runways at the airport, which is among the busiest in the United States. More than 60 units from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene, where they found the aircraft ablaze and worked to extinguish the flames and assess any potential injuries. As of the latest updates, officials had not released information regarding injuries or fatalities. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the aircraft overran the runway around 2 p.m. after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue indicated that the plane struck multiple vehicles after leaving the runway. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the FAA was dispatching investigators and had issued a full ground stop at Miami International as emergency crews responded. Images from the scene showed the Prime Air plane resting beside a roadway near two semi-trucks, largely intact despite the fire. An airport spokesperson confirmed that all runways and taxiways were closed, resulting in approximately 250 flight delays at the airport as of late afternoon Sunday, according to FlightAware, which tracks flight disruptions. The FAA cautioned that delays were likely to continue even after the airport reopened, with arrivals and departures expected to resume at a reduced rate. The National Transportation Safety Board announced it was gathering information regarding the crash. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
