Zelensky anticipates continuation of war into winter following talks with US envoys

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he expects the war with Russia to continue into the winter after discussions with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Kyiv. The talks concluded without a major breakthrough, following the envoys' previous meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Witkoff described the discussions in Kyiv as 'substantive' and 'important'. Zelensky emphasized the need for a just peace that would prevent further Russian aggression. After the initial round of talks, Zelensky announced that officials from Ukraine, Europe, and the US would convene soon to continue discussions. Witkoff expressed confidence in reaching a good resolution, noting progress made in Moscow. Zelensky highlighted that if the war persists into winter, Ukraine would require air defense and energy support. The US has been supplying Ukraine with Patriot interceptors to counter Russian missile attacks, although its stockpiles have been affected by other conflicts. Historically, Russia has targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure during winter. Kushner mentioned that the US team discussed previous unsuccessful ideas and sought elements necessary for a durable peace. The envoys traveled to Kyiv by train after flying to Poland, as landing their plane was not feasible. During their visit, Zelensky welcomed them at St Sophia Cathedral, near a site recently struck by a Russian drone. Despite ongoing negotiations, Russian and Ukrainian forces continued to exchange strikes, with Ukraine confirming attacks on various targets. Earlier, Ukraine's Air Force reported a significant drone and missile attack from Russia, with its defenses intercepting a majority of the threats. The Moscow talks, lasting three hours, were described by Putin's adviser Yuri Ushakov as 'constructive' and focused on resolving the war and addressing economic issues. Despite increased aerial attacks, Russian ground forces have made limited progress, maintaining control over approximately one-fifth of Ukrainian territory seized in 2022.
