US Energy Secretary Comments on Nuclear Agreement with Iran

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated during an interview on ABC News that there may not be a nuclear deal with Iran, indicating a potential shift in US strategy towards military action against Iranian nuclear capabilities. Wright mentioned, "It may be simply destroying their capabilities to do it," referring to Iran's ambitions to develop nuclear weapons. He noted that the US has previously targeted facilities linked to Iran's nuclear program, while Iran maintains that its nuclear efforts are solely for power generation. When asked about the possibility of continued bombing instead of pursuing diplomacy, Wright asserted that the US is degrading Iran's capacity to develop nuclear weapons. He also suggested that a nuclear agreement could be possible under a different Iranian administration, stating, "An agreement may await the next administration in Iran; we simply don’t know that." The comments come amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran, following the collapse of a memorandum of understanding in July and a series of attacks. Despite the ongoing conflict, the White House has attempted to downplay the situation, with President Trump referring to it as "small potatoes" and Vice President JD Vance suggesting that the conflict has cooled. Wright emphasized the US's commitment to working with allies in the region to address the situation in Iran, stating, "We will work in cooperation with our allies in the region."
