LSU Fans Boo Jayden Daniels During Jumbotron Tribute Amid NIL Dispute

<p>Jayden Daniels played for the LSU Tigers for two seasons and received multiple awards, including the Heisman Trophy, during his final season in 2023. Despite his achievements, some LSU fans expressed their discontent during a recent game against Clemson.</p><p>During a break in the game at Tiger Stadium, a video titled "NFLSU" was shown on the jumbotron, featuring former LSU players currently in the NFL. Most players received positive reactions from the crowd, but when Daniels' name was mentioned alongside former teammate K'Lavon Chaisson of the Washington Commanders, the audience responded with boos.</p><p>This negative reaction follows a cease-and-desist letter sent by Daniels and his attorney, Adam Kenner, to LSU in August. The letter stated that the university could not use Daniels' name, image, and likeness (NIL) without permission.</p><p>In the letter addressed to LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry, Kenner wrote, "Accordingly, LSU must immediately cease and desist from any further issue, use, display, publication, distribution, promotion, commercialization, or other exploitation of Mr. Daniels' NIL in any manner or medium. Any use of Mr. Daniels' NIL occurring after LSU's receipt of this notice will be deemed knowing and willful and will be pursued vigorously through all available legal and equitable remedies, without further notice."</p><p>Daniels wore No. 5 during his time at LSU, a number currently worn by sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett, who claims he has worn it throughout his career and was promised the number upon joining the team.</p><p>Brian Kelly, the former head coach at LSU who coached Daniels, was also involved in recruiting Pickett. Lane Kiffin, who took over as head coach in 2026, had no direct ties to Daniels during his time at LSU, as Kiffin was coaching at Ole Miss at that time.</p><p>After winning the Heisman Trophy in 2023, it was anticipated that Daniels' No. 5 jersey would be retired by LSU, but the university has a five-year waiting period before retiring numbers can be discussed.</p><p>Daniels reportedly believed that LSU should have consulted him before allowing another player to wear No. 5, which had not been worn since his departure for the NFL. In contrast, Joe Burrow, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2019 and led LSU to a national championship, has not had his No. 9 jersey worn by another player since being drafted first overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020.</p>
