Colorado Man Arrested After Hit-and-Run While Free on Bond for Wife's Alleged Murder

A man in Colorado, Barry Morphew, who was free on a $3 million bond related to the alleged killing of his wife, was arrested on Friday after being involved in a hit-and-run crash with two other vehicles in Denver. Morphew was booked into the Boulder County Jail. Alamosa County District Judge Amanda Hopkins has scheduled a hearing to discuss Morphew’s bond on Tuesday, according to online records. Under the terms of his bond established last year, Morphew was restricted from traveling away from his home in southern Colorado except for work and other limited circumstances. Prosecutors indicated that Morphew was traveling to Denver International Airport on August 28, possibly to pick up his daughter, when the crash occurred. District Attorney Anne Kelly stated in a court filing, "To go to the airport for any purpose other than work constitutes a breach of his bond." Morphew’s attorneys did not respond to requests for comment on Friday. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is set to face trial next summer for the death of his wife, Suzanne Morphew, who disappeared in 2020. Suzanne Morphew’s skeletal remains were discovered off a dirt road in southern Colorado in 2023. Although charges against Barry Morphew had been dropped by that time, he was later charged again with first-degree murder in connection with his wife's death and subsequently arrested. Investigators reported finding no signs of trauma in Suzanne Morphew’s remains but allegedly detected traces of a drug cocktail used to tranquilize wildlife in her bone marrow. Prosecutors claim that Barry Morphew was the only individual in the area, aside from wildlife officials, authorized to use the chemicals.
