The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) has announced a new international mission to reach Gaza, with vessels making stops at European ports before attempting to arrive at Gaza’s shores in October 2026. The coalition stated that the mission aims to challenge what it describes as Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza, which it claims has resulted in violence against flotilla volunteers and activists. The coalition cited documented incidents of severe beatings, tasering, and sexual assault against participants in previous missions.
The FFC noted that action is necessary as global attention has shifted away from Gaza since a ceasefire was announced in October 2025. According to the coalition, two vessels have already departed: Handala II, which traveled through Scandinavia in June and July, and the Kate, which left Bristol, UK, earlier this month, making stops in Ireland, Germany, and France. Planned stops in Spain, Portugal, and Italy will precede the flotilla's journey to Gaza.
Zohar Chamberlain Regev, a member of the FFC Steering Committee, stated, "The Freedom Flotilla sails again because our governments continue to fail to uphold their obligations." He emphasized the demand for Palestinians to live with dignity.
The flotilla includes human rights advocates, peace activists, elected representatives, journalists, medical professionals, and advocates for Palestinian rights. The coalition is urging governments to ensure safe passage for the flotilla, press Israel to allow the entry of food, water, and medicine into Gaza, and declare that any attack on the vessels will have diplomatic repercussions.
Edward Digilio, an engineer from Maryland participating in the mission, acknowledged the risks of sailing toward Gaza but argued that silence and inaction pose a greater cost for Palestinians and the global community.
The FFC traces its origins to 2010, following the Israeli interception of the Mavi Marmara, which resulted in the deaths of 10 activists. In the past year, Israeli forces have intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla twice, detaining over 450 participants in October 2025 and about 175 more in April 2026, including notable figures such as South African author Zukiswa Wanner and Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela.
Amnesty International has reported on the mistreatment of activists detained by Israel, including sleep deprivation and denial of medical care. Two activists, Thiago Avila and Saif Abukeshek, were held incommunicado for days in April 2026 before being deported.
The mission is part of a broader effort by various aid groups, which have described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as critical despite the ceasefire. UNICEF estimates that over 82 percent of families in Gaza face water insecurity, and approximately 90 percent of water and sanitation infrastructure has been destroyed. Recent reports indicate that Israeli forces have continued to target hospitals, aid warehouses, and medical supply sites in Gaza, with the Health Ministry recording over 1,300 deaths from Israeli fire since the ceasefire began, alongside many individuals still missing or believed trapped under rubble.
