Explosion at Bolivia military barracks results in fatalities and injuries

An explosion occurred at a military barracks in Viacha, Bolivia, approximately 30 kilometers from La Paz, resulting in at least two confirmed deaths. Bolivian Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano reported that at least 58 individuals sustained injuries due to the incident, which took place around 14:30 local time (18:30 GMT) on Friday. Health official Rita Nebraska indicated to local television that the death toll could rise, with estimates suggesting between 10 and 15 fatalities. According to Reuters, the explosion was caused by the detonation of 'pyrotechnic material' at the barracks, which houses an artillery regiment. Police reported that numerous homes in the vicinity were damaged, primarily from shattered windows, and emergency workers are currently searching through the debris. Nebraska also warned of the potential for further explosions and advised the public to maintain a distance of at least 150 meters from the military base. Police spokesman Roger Roca informed AFP that fireworks were being stored at the site, and the cause of the explosion is under investigation. In response to the tragedy, local authorities in Viacha have declared three days of mourning.
