Trump Comments on Mistrial in Lindsay Clancy Case

<p>President Donald Trump on Friday commented on the mistrial in the Lindsay Clancy murder case, referring to the deaths of her three young children as a "horrible tragedy" and predicting that she would face another trial.</p><p>"It’s a shame. It’s a horrible tragedy," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. "Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse."</p><p>Trump noted that the case, which has received extensive media coverage, was difficult to overlook. He indicated that Clancy would face consequences, potentially leading to confinement in a psychiatric institution or prison.</p><p>"There’ll be a price," Trump said, expressing his belief that prosecutors would retry the case and calling that possibility "too bad."</p><p>Massachusetts Superior Court Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial on Friday after the nine-woman, three-man jury reported they could not reach a unanimous verdict after seven days of deliberations.</p><p>Clancy, 36, faced three counts of first-degree murder in the January 2023 deaths of her children: Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months, inside their home in Duxbury. She has pleaded not guilty.</p><p>While Clancy admitted to strangling the children with exercise bands, her attorneys argued that severe postpartum mental illness impaired her ability to understand her actions. Prosecutors contended that the killings were intentional and that Clancy was criminally responsible.</p><p>The jury's final note indicated they could not reach a unanimous decision.</p><p>"With a heavy heart we report we cannot come to a unanimous decision," the jurors wrote.</p><p>Defense attorney Kevin Reddington stated he believed the jury was 11-1 in favor of finding Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity, although the actual vote remains undisclosed.</p><p>Reddington attempted to remove an alleged holdout juror, claiming that jury notes suggested the juror was not following the law. He described the juror as "biased" against individuals with "debilitating mental illness." Judge Sullivan rejected this request and allowed the defense one hour to seek emergency intervention from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court before declaring a mistrial. The state's highest court declined to intervene.</p><p>Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz has not yet announced whether prosecutors will retry the case. Clancy will continue to be held at a state psychiatric hospital, according to the Associated Press.</p>
