Brazil’s Supreme Court is currently evaluating investigations into two justices, Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Justice Andre Mendonca, who have accused each other of misconduct. The dispute arises from allegations made by Mendonca, a Bolsonaro appointee, who released a report claiming connections between de Moraes and banker Daniel Vorcaro, who is implicated in a fraud scheme. De Moraes has accused Mendonca of overstepping his authority by unsealing documents related to the case.
Chief Justice Edson Fachin announced on Friday that he would allow Brazil’s attorney general five days to consider the allegations against Mendonca. The court is also expected to decide next week whether to investigate de Moraes.

The allegations against de Moraes have been leveraged by right-wing factions to question the legitimacy of the case against former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest following a 27-year prison sentence related to a coup plot.
Following his defeat to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in 2022, Bolsonaro and his supporters are accused of attempting to undermine the election results. Tensions escalated into an attack on government buildings in Brasilia on January 8, 2023, by Bolsonaro supporters. In November 2024, Brazil’s federal police recommended charges against Bolsonaro and several associates.
Bolsonaro has characterized the legal actions against him as a politically motivated “witch hunt,” receiving backing from figures such as former U.S. President Donald Trump. De Moraes, who oversaw the case against Bolsonaro, has faced criticism from the far-right due to his involvement in politically sensitive cases.
The Vorcaro fraud scandal poses a risk to the court's reputation, with unsealed documents indicating that Vorcaro may have sought advice from de Moraes. Calls for de Moraes to clarify his relationship with Vorcaro have emerged, with some demanding his resignation.
As Brazil approaches a contentious presidential election on October 4, candidates from both sides are accusing each other of corruption. The election will feature Lula against Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, Jair Bolsonaro’s eldest son. The right-wing candidate has attempted to frame the scandal as a conspiracy between de Moraes and the political left aimed at undermining his father’s legacy. Senator Bolsonaro recently stated, "Out with Lula! Out with Moraes! This duo has no place left in leading the Country. It’s time for change! Brazil will win!"
Flavio Bolsonaro has also faced scrutiny due to his connections with Vorcaro, with reports indicating he sought funding from Vorcaro for a film about his father. Senator Bolsonaro has denied any misconduct, asserting that it was a private endeavor.
