<p>Police confronted and fatally shot a man wielding a knife in New York City on Friday, following a recent stabbing incident in Times Square. The man was first seen walking on the Brooklyn Bridge cables around 3:30 a.m., prompting officers from the NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit (ESU) to attempt to persuade him to come down safely, according to Assistant Chief Gerard Dowling.</p><p>During the standoff, the man reportedly lunged at the officers and made threatening statements, including, “I want to die, I want you to kill me, I have a bomb, you’re not going to make me do something bad to the cops,” as stated by Dowling.</p><p>Officers attempted to reason with the man for nearly one hour, urging him to drop his weapon. Eventually, he began to descend the cables and lunged at an officer when he was within three feet. At that point, an ESU member discharged his weapon, striking the man.</p><p>The man was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Following the incident, all Brooklyn-bound lanes of the bridge were closed during peak hours of the Friday morning commute.</p><p>This incident followed another knife attack in New York City on Monday, where Erin Piacenti, a young mother and VP at Bank of America, was killed by a woman identified as Pamela Cisneros, who was armed with two kitchen knives. Another man was also injured in that attack but was released from the hospital on Tuesday.</p><p>Cisneros, 49, from Queens, had a history of mental health issues and refused commands to drop her knives when confronted by police near an NYPD substation. During the encounter, she reportedly stated, “I’m not dropping anything. I would rather kill both of you.”</p><p>Additionally, there was a previous stabbing incident near Times Square where a man was stabbed in the head during an argument inside a subway station.</p>
