Judge Rules NFL Players Can Return to LSU Amid SEC Lawsuit

A Louisiana judge has issued a preliminary injunction allowing two NFL players, Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, to return to LSU and compete in NCAA sports. This decision comes on the same day the Southeastern Conference (SEC) filed a lawsuit against LSU, claiming the university is violating conference rules by attempting to recruit players previously signed to NFL rosters. Judge William Jorden's ruling permits the inclusion of the players, both of whom participated in NFL training camps this summer. The SEC has announced plans to appeal the ruling. In a statement, the SEC expressed disagreement with the court's decision, emphasizing that member universities should not include former professional athletes on their rosters. The SEC's statement highlighted the importance of maintaining fair competition and the authority of the conference to govern its members. Earlier in the day, the SEC filed a lawsuit against LSU's athletic director Verge Ausberry and head coach Lane Kiffin, alleging a coordinated effort to recruit professional athletes. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey testified in support of the need to differentiate between professional and college sports. Wright, who has previously played for the Browns and Eagles, and Harris, who was with the Saints, are among over 40 athletes suing the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility. Kiffin defended the recruitment of former NFL players, citing recent rulings that allow such athletes to enter the transfer portal and compete. LSU has until Friday to finalize its roster ahead of their season opener against Clemson.
