Bystanders and Police Rescue Woman Trapped Under Volkswagen After E-Bike Crash in Pennsylvania

<p>A group of bystanders and police officers assisted in lifting a Volkswagen Beetle off an injured e-bike rider after she became trapped beneath the car during a crash on a Pennsylvania road, as shown in body camera video.</p><p>Local authorities reported that the 44-year-old woman sustained several broken bones in the crash that occurred on Monday morning in Prospect Park. Approximately six bystanders joined officers in lifting the vehicle to pull her to safety, according to FOX 29.</p><p>Prospect Park Police Chief Dave Madonna stated that the woman was riding an e-bike at an estimated speed of over 20 mph without a helmet when she collided with the Volkswagen at an intersection along Route 420.</p><p>Madonna remarked, "She was driving way too fast for that time of day, for the road she was traveling on," and suggested that she may have been attempting to overtake vehicles while heading to an appointment.</p><p>Surveillance and police body camera footage captured bystanders rushing to the scene to assist.</p><p>Approximately six individuals worked together to lift the car high enough to free the woman trapped underneath.</p><p>FedEx driver Carl Wise described the event, saying, "Got a yell to help, ran over. We lifted the Volkswagen Beetle up, pulled the girl out and pushed her to the ground so she wouldn't move, that's all."</p><p>Wise added, "I'm no hero. I'm just a guy doing a job, that's all."</p><p>Local business owner Chrissy Vollmer, who also responded, recounted, "All I saw were the lady's legs underneath the car, and she was just yelling, ‘Get this car off of me.’"</p><p>Madonna referred to the bystanders who helped rescue the woman as "heroes" and later visited them to express his gratitude.</p><p>He also raised concerns regarding what he described as an increase in e-bike crashes, stating, "How many more tragedies do we have to see before some type of action is taken?"</p><p>The woman was transported to Lankenau Hospital and underwent surgery for a broken collarbone and other injuries, as reported by FOX 29.</p><p>The driver of the Volkswagen is not facing charges, and police indicated that the e-bike rider may receive a traffic citation pending the investigation's outcome.</p>
