MacKenzie Weegar Comments on American Players Seeking Trades from Canadian Teams

<p>Recent discussions in the NHL have focused on American players requesting trades to teams in the United States. Factors influencing these requests include the pressure of playing in Canadian markets, the economic advantages in the U.S., and the current competitiveness of U.S. teams.</p><p>Utah Mammoth defenseman MacKenzie Weegar, who has played in both Canadian and American markets, shared his perspective on the situation. He noted that players like Brady Tkachuk, who was traded from the Ottawa Senators to the Florida Panthers, and Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets, who confirmed his trade request, are part of this trend. Additionally, Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks also sought a trade, eventually joining the Minnesota Wild.</p><p>Weegar, an Ottawa native, expressed his disappointment at seeing American players wanting to leave Canada, acknowledging the passion of Canadian fans for hockey. He stated, "But it’s a bit unfortunate to see players wanting out of Canada just because I know how passionate the fans are and all the citizens in each city and how much they love their hockey and their star players," during an interview with TSN's OverDrive.</p><p>He also recognized the appeal of American teams, mentioning that some, like Utah, offer more attractive conditions compared to Canadian teams. Weegar added, "You don’t like to see it, but at the same time, there’s a lot of teams out here [like] Utah that has a little bit more to offer than, say, in Canada. But at the end of the day, we’re all hockey players; it doesn’t matter where you play, you just want to play in the NHL. It’s the best league in the world." He acknowledged that players might prefer situations that are more favorable for their personal and professional lives, especially if it increases their chances of winning a Stanley Cup.</p>
