<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul el Sayed stated he aims to provide Twitch streamer Hasan Piker’s followers a "pathway" into his campaign, despite Piker’s controversial remarks that have drawn criticism from both Republicans and Democrats.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">"I want to offer them a pathway into an electoral movement," el Sayed told Stephen A. Smith on SiriusXM’s "Straight Shooter with Stephen A." He expressed a desire for Piker’s audience to understand where he aligns with the streamer while also offering a "pathway that disavows the things that I disagree with." </p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Piker, a socialist Twitch streamer with approximately 3 million followers, has become a notable figure in the 2026 midterm elections after campaigning alongside el Sayed during the Michigan Democratic primary.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, Piker’s history of controversial comments has led some Democrats to call for the party to distance itself from him. Piker has made statements suggesting that American Jews’ support for Israel could lead to actions against Jews in the United States. He has also expressed a preference for Hamas over Israel.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The controversy regarding el Sayed’s association with Piker arises as Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers seeks to attract Jewish voters in what is expected to be a competitive race in the 2026 election cycle.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Piker faced backlash in 2019 for stating that the U.S. "deserved" the September 11 terrorist attacks, although he later clarified that his comments were taken out of context.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Several Democratic senators, including Cory Booker (D-NJ), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), and Jon Ossoff (D-GA), have urged the Democratic Party to distance itself from Piker, with some explicitly disavowing him.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite this, el Sayed has not disavowed Piker. When asked by Smith if there was anything Piker could say that would lead him to publicly disavow the streamer, el Sayed acknowledged the possibility but argued against "categorically" disavowing individuals over disagreeable comments, referencing Piker’s retraction of his 9/11 statement.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">El Sayed’s campaign is currently working to engage Jewish voters in Michigan, including the hiring of a Jewish community liaison. He has also apologized to Jewish Democrats for past comments that critics interpreted as sympathetic to a perpetrator of a March terrorist attack on a synagogue, stating that "violence is a cycle" and that "hurt people hurt people."</p>
