Sen. Susan Collins Comments on Democratic Opponent's Family Background

<p>Senator Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine, addressed reports regarding her Democratic opponent, Troy Jackson, fathering two children with his second cousin. Collins stated, "Well, I'm not going to bring up the fact that the mother of his two children is his second cousin," when asked if Jackson's personal life would be a topic during the campaign. She added, "I don’t know whether people know that or not." </p><p>The exchange occurred during an interview with a Politico reporter, which quickly gained traction on social media, with some conservatives praising Collins for her approach. Republican political operative Jesse Hunt referred to Collins as a "silent killer," while Politico editor Mike DeBonis described her as "stone-cold" in political combat. </p><p>Justin Davis, the National Rifle Association's public affairs director and a Maine native, commented that the upcoming debates would be significant. Igor Bobic from NOTUS noted that Collins employed a strategy similar to former President Trump by hinting at a subject without directly mentioning it. </p><p>Reports about Jackson's relationship with his second cousin first emerged in July, when The Maine Wire reported that Jackson and his partner share the same great-grandparents. Conservative commentator Greg Price remarked on social media about the difficulty Democrats face in finding suitable candidates. </p><p>Jackson's personal history has also come under scrutiny, including a 1988 police report alleging he assaulted a man at a bar, which he does not dispute, but he denies any wrongdoing towards his partner, who has stated she does not remember giving a police statement regarding the incident. </p><p>In response to questions about the police report, Collins stated that Jackson needs to address the reports himself, emphasizing the importance of vetting candidates. She noted that Jackson has a long political history that could be criticized, unlike his predecessor, Graham Platner, who was a political outsider. </p><p>Jackson has characterized the GOP's focus on his personal life as a diversion from the issues that matter to Mainers, stating, "Susan Collins will do anything to distract from the fact that she votes with Trump 96% of the time and has sold out working people in Maine." His campaign did not respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.</p>
