UNICEF Report: One in Five Youths Experience Online Sexual Abuse

A survey conducted by UNICEF, the United Nations agency for children, involving around 21,000 young people, has revealed an increase in online sexual abuse of minors. The report highlights that one in five individuals aged 12 to 17 experienced sexual assault online in the past year. The findings indicate that over 15 million children were exposed to unwanted sexual content, with approximately 9 million pressured into sexual conversations or asked to share sexual images. Furthermore, around 4 million reported having sexual images shared without their consent. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stated that these experiences lead to significant emotional and mental distress, with many children suffering in silence. The report also notes that most perpetrators are known to their victims, with 57% being friends, family members, or romantic partners. The major social media platforms are identified as primary gateways for such behavior, with 60% of assaults occurring on Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. The report calls for enhanced protection for children and young people in the digital environment. It follows a recent settlement by Meta, which agreed to pay up to $17.1 billion to settle claims from several US states regarding harm to children on its platforms. The report also references various studies indicating the prevalence of online sexual harassment among youths in different countries, including a 2020 EU Kids Online Survey that found 22% of participants had received sexually explicit messages online. The UNICEF report emphasizes the need for governments and tech companies to take action to safeguard minors online.
