<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The judge in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, who is accused of killing her three children, has instructed the jury to deliberate further after they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict for a second time.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Clancy is charged with strangling her three children in their Duxbury, Massachusetts home in 2023 using exercise resistance bands. Her defense team acknowledges the killings but is pursuing an insanity defense, claiming Clancy was in a postpartum psychotic state at the time.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Following 17 hours of initial deliberations, the jury, which consists of nine women and three men, informed Massachusetts Superior Court Judge William Sullivan on Tuesday that they could not reach a unanimous decision. After more than 24 hours, the jury sent another note to the judge on Wednesday afternoon indicating they were still unable to agree on a verdict.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Clancy faces a potential life sentence if found guilty. Conversely, if the jury rules in favor of her insanity defense, she would be committed to a state mental health institution.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Judge Sullivan had previously acknowledged the lengthy nature of the trial, stating, “I brought you back out because I know that this was a long trial. All right, I know. There were over 80 witnesses, there were over 300 exhibits. But because of that, I’m going to ask you to go back out.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The trial concluded its closing arguments on Thursday, August 27, after five weeks of testimony.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The prosecution contends that Clancy was experiencing mental health issues when she killed her children but still made a conscious decision to commit the acts. Clancy's legal team argues that her doctors mishandled her postpartum psychosis diagnosis, prescribing numerous potentially harmful medications. Clancy has also stated that she attempted suicide after the deaths of her children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months.</p>
