Uber to Reduce Workforce by Over 3,000 Jobs in Global Restructuring

Uber is cutting more than 3,000 jobs worldwide, which represents approximately 10% of its global workforce, as part of a significant restructuring effort aimed at reducing management layers and refocusing spending on its core business. This reduction will bring staffing levels back to those seen in 2021. Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi informed employees in a company email that the rapid expansion of the company had led to excessive layers and small teams that hindered decision-making. He stated that these job cuts would position Uber better for its "biggest opportunities ahead of us." This restructuring is one of Uber's largest in recent years and indicates a move towards a more streamlined operating model. Following the announcement, Uber's shares rose nearly 2%, suggesting investor approval of the proposed changes. The layoffs will impact both managerial and non-managerial positions, with plans to consolidate many of the smallest teams into larger groups. However, the company has not specified which locations will be most affected by the job cuts. Khosrowshahi mentioned that the changes aim to make Uber "simpler" and "faster," while also freeing up funds for reinvestment in areas deemed essential for the company's future. This restructuring occurs alongside Uber's increased investment in autonomous vehicle partnerships and its expansion in ride-hailing, delivery, and robotaxi services. Additionally, Uber is revising its office strategy by requiring nearly all employees to work in person at designated hubs, limiting remote roles to about 1%. Analysts estimate that the layoffs could lead to annual savings of up to $2 billion. Unlike many large technology companies that have recently implemented job cuts due to high spending on artificial intelligence, Uber had not made significant reductions since the pandemic. The workforce reduction will bring Uber's total employee count to just under 30,000, similar to levels before its latest expansion phase.
