Gerard McCarthy, a former BBC actor known for roles in 'The Fall' and 'Call The Midwife', withdrew from the London theatre production 'Right Before I Go' after Dame Maureen Lipman was cast. McCarthy cited Lipman's publicly expressed views on Israel and Palestine as the reason for his withdrawal. Following his announcement, McCarthy liked several comments on Instagram that included derogatory remarks about Lipman, including one that referred to her as a 'zio hag'.
In a statement, McCarthy clarified that he does not endorse anti-Semitic language and regretted any impression that he supported such comments. He stated that his decision to withdraw was based on political differences, not on Lipman's Jewish identity.
Lipman, a prominent Jewish performer, has faced protests due to her defense of Israel. She commented on McCarthy's withdrawal, stating he did not contact her before making his decision and challenged him to discuss his views with her.
The production, which explores themes related to suicide and mental health, will continue despite the departures of McCarthy and another performer, Iz Hesketh, who also cited Lipman's casting as a reason for her withdrawal. The creative team emphasized their commitment to artistic collaboration regardless of political beliefs.
The play is set to run at the Soho Theatre from September 5-10, with the final performance coinciding with World Suicide Prevention Day.
