A court in Sheffield has heard that a newborn baby, referred to as Baby S, suffered 15 stab wounds before being concealed in an outhouse. The baby was discovered fatally injured in a residence in the Wincobank area at approximately 6am on Sunday, August 30. According to the prosecution, the child was allegedly stabbed in a bathroom, wrapped in a towel and a blue bag, and then placed on a washing machine in the outhouse.
On September 2, Andrea Skopova, 20, the baby's mother, appeared in court charged with the murder of Baby S at the property located in Holywell Heights. Alongside her, Peter Horvath Jr, 19, and his parents, Nina Horvathova, 37, and Peter Horvath Sr, 38, also faced charges of murder. All four individuals, who are Slovak nationals, were remanded in custody. Additionally, a 15-year-old girl, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, has been charged with perverting the course of justice.
The court was informed that the baby had sustained 33 wounds from the 15 stabbings. Prosecutor Luke Hopkinson stated that Skopova gave birth to the baby at 37 weeks and subsequently sought medical assistance. Hospital staff, suspecting the baby was not in the womb, alerted the police shortly after 5am. When police arrived at the residence, they were unable to locate the child and later returned to the address in Holywell Heights.
Upon their return, officers found the baby wrapped in toweling and placed in a blue bag on top of a washing machine in the outhouse. The injuries were described as catastrophic, with the baby suffering from multiple stab wounds. It is alleged that Horvathova and the 15-year-old girl attempted to clean the crime scene.
An eight-year-old child was present in the house during the incident. District Judge Tim Spruce remanded all five defendants in custody to appear before Sheffield Crown Court. Two additional women, aged 26 and 37, who were arrested on suspicion of murder, remain on bail. Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward of South Yorkshire Police expressed gratitude to the community for their support during the investigation.
