Tiger Woods is scheduled to change his plea in court five months after being arrested on a charge of driving under the influence (DUI) following a rollover crash in Florida. Court records indicate that the change of plea hearing is set for Wednesday morning in Martin County, Florida. Woods was arrested after the March crash, during which he passed a breathalyzer test but declined further testing for other drugs.
He pleaded not guilty in March to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and refusal to submit to testing. Woods, 50, stated that he was seeking treatment after the incident. The specifics of the plea change have not been disclosed. The BBC has reached out to prosecutors and Woods' attorney for comment.
No injuries were reported from the crash, although Woods had to exit the vehicle through the passenger door. In April, police released body camera footage showing the aftermath of the incident, where Woods appeared calm and explained to officers, "I looked down at my phone, and all of a sudden, boom."
Although he passed a breathalyzer test, Woods declined to take a urinalysis for other substances. He informed officers that he had not consumed alcohol that day but acknowledged taking prescription medication earlier that morning. Officers suspected that his faculties were impaired by an unknown substance. Authorities later found two white pills in his pocket, identified as hydrocodone, an opioid prescribed for pain relief.
Following the incident, Woods addressed the situation on social media, stating, "I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my wellbeing and work toward lasting recovery." This incident marks Woods' second arrest on suspicion of DUI.
