Dan Koh Wins Massachusetts Primary to Replace Seth Moulton in Congress

<p>Dan Koh, a former aide in the Biden administration, won a primary election in Massachusetts, positioning himself for a potential seat in the House of Representatives in November. Koh secured the top position among six candidates vying to replace Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., who concluded his House tenure following a failed Senate bid against incumbent Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass.</p><p>Koh received endorsements from former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris, reflecting his previous role as chief of staff to Labor Secretary Marty Walsh and later as deputy assistant to the president and deputy director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.</p><p>This primary victory marks Koh's second attempt at a congressional seat; he previously lost the Democratic nomination in Massachusetts' 3rd Congressional District to Rep. Lori Trahan, D-Mass., in 2018. His campaign focuses on progressive issues, including the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and advocating for universal healthcare.</p><p>Koh is now positioned to succeed Moulton in the 6th Congressional District, which encompasses the northeastern region of Massachusetts and is considered a safe Democratic seat. Moulton, a Marine Corps veteran, has represented the district since 2015 and recently faced a competitive primary challenge from Markey, who has been in office since 2013.</p><p>Markey's campaign received support from prominent progressive figures, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. In contrast, Koh is viewed as part of the establishment left, with family ties to federal government service; his father, Howard Koh, served as an assistant secretary in the Department of Health and Human Services under President Barack Obama, and his uncle held positions in both the Obama and Clinton administrations.</p><p>Koh will now face Republican candidate Micah Jones, who is currently unopposed in his primary.</p>
