Darius Slayton continues to be a member of the New York Giants roster despite ongoing questions about his status. After practice on Tuesday, Slayton stated, "Maybe contrary to common belief, some studies would suggest that I have done more good than bad. Otherwise I probably would’ve been gone with three different people coming here and evaluating me. It is what it is." Slayton's career has spanned four different coaching regimes since he joined the team, including Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge, Brian Daboll, and now John Harbaugh.
Reports indicated that Slayton's position was uncertain ahead of the roster cut deadline on Sunday, but he managed to secure his place once again. He noted, "It’s not the first time, probably won’t be the last time. But I really don’t pay it too much of mind, honestly."
Slayton's performance has varied with expectations; he has performed well when expectations were low, such as after being drafted in the fifth round or following a pay cut, but has struggled when expectations were high, like after signing a three-year, $36 million contract last year. Last season, he recorded 538 receiving yards, his lowest since 2021, and faced issues with dropped passes.
He acknowledged that the turnover in coaching staff has contributed to the uncertainty surrounding his role, stating, "Anytime there’s new people, there’s going to be that. Just for me, I’ve just been fortunate to be here for four staffs. I don’t take it personally. I understand that you have to show and prove yourself whenever there’s new [coaches]. That’s what I plan to do this year."
After undergoing sports hernia surgery in the offseason, Slayton admitted he is not yet at full strength but contributed with four receptions for 58 yards in a preseason game against the Dolphins, which Harbaugh highlighted as a significant performance.
With his position secured, Slayton will now compete for playing time among other receivers, including Malik Nabers, Darnell Mooney, Odell Beckham Jr., and Malachi Fields. He expressed confidence in his abilities, saying, "I feel like we have a bunch in the room, a lot of really talented guys that we’ve added to the roster. I see myself as one of those guys."
Slayton has remained a consistent presence in the Giants organization amid significant changes in recent years, asserting that he deserves to continue his role with the team.
