Mike Minogue Wins Massachusetts GOP Gubernatorial Primary, Set to Challenge Democratic Governor Maura Healey

<p>Former medical device executive Mike Minogue won the Massachusetts gubernatorial primary on September 1, 2026, defeating Brian Shortsleeve, a former executive at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). Minogue will now face Democratic Governor Maura Healey, who is seeking a second term.</p><p>Massachusetts has had continuous Democratic representation in Congress since 1996, but Republicans have historically been more successful in gubernatorial races since the Reagan era. Minogue emphasized his business experience in campaign materials, highlighting his tenure at GE Healthcare and his leadership at Danvers-based Abiomed.</p><p>Minogue gained attention on social media when investor Kevin O’Leary, known from the television show Shark Tank, appeared in one of his campaign videos, stating he does not typically support politicians. O’Leary remarked, "Massachusetts is ‘dead-money’ now. We need a guy like this to run the show," in July.</p><p>According to The Boston Herald, Healey launched an advertisement attacking Minogue as "MAGA Mike," suggesting that he has garnered her attention and may benefit Shortsleeve.</p><p>Minogue secured the state GOP convention endorsement with 70% of the vote, while Shortsleeve achieved his ballot position with just over the required 15%. He self-funded approximately $7 million of the more than $7.5 million he raised in the first quarter of 2026 and hosted a fundraiser with Vice President JD Vance. In contrast, Shortsleeve raised about $646,500 during the same period.</p><p>Healey was formally renominated on September 1 after running unopposed. Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll, also a Democrat, advances unopposed to the November election.</p><p>However, Republicans lack candidates in nearly half of the state’s congressional districts and in the races for secretary of state and state auditor. A signature issue has forced lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Anne Manning Martin to run a write-in campaign.</p><p>Several districts, including those in the Berkshires and the Massachusetts Turnpike corridor, have no Republican candidates, ensuring Democratic nominees will advance in those races ahead of the November election.</p><p>Historically, Massachusetts state government has not always been reliably Democratic. Former Governor Charlie Baker, a moderate Republican, served from 2015 to 2023. Former Senator Mitt Romney, R-Utah, was governor from 2003 to 2007 but chose not to seek re-election before running unsuccessfully for president against Barack Obama.</p><p>Romney was preceded by several Republican governors, including William Weld, Paul Cellucci, and Jane Swift. Swift became governor when Cellucci was appointed as ambassador to Canada. Weld succeeded Michael Dukakis, the 1988 Democratic presidential nominee, during a period when Democrats held the governorship more frequently.</p>
