Local authorities in Pattaya, Thailand, have announced a crackdown on prostitution in anticipation of the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is carrying 5,000 sailors and Marines who have been at sea for over 200 days. The aircraft carrier is scheduled to dock on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Police are preparing additional patrols around Pattaya's main beachfront and nightlife district, following weekend raids that resulted in the detention of 40 to 50 individuals for suspected prostitution. Pattaya police chief Anek Srathongyoo stated that while efforts are being made to control solicitation, it remains challenging due to the potential for sex workers to operate without detection.
Prostitution is illegal in Thailand, yet the sex industry is visible in major tourism areas, including Pattaya and parts of Bangkok. The USS Abraham Lincoln left its home port of San Diego in November and was redirected to the Middle East to support military operations related to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, setting a record for consecutive days at sea, according to Democratic lawmakers. Reports have emerged regarding mental health concerns and deteriorating conditions aboard the ship, including incidents of suicide attempts and declining morale.
In Pattaya, which has a history of catering to US servicemen since the Vietnam War, local officials are hopeful for an economic boost from the sailors' visit. Each US military personnel is expected to spend between 1,000 to 3,000 baht per day ($30 to $91), depending on their length of stay ashore. Pattaya Mayor Poramase Ngampiches indicated that the staggered shore leave would mean not all personnel would disembark simultaneously, but he believes the visit will stimulate the local economy in the short term.
However, there are concerns that increased spending may also benefit the sex tourism industry, which has been described by the FBI as one of the world's leading destinations for such activities. Associate Professor Pipatpong Fakfare from Bangkok University's School of Humanities and Tourism Management warned about the potential health risks associated with a large influx of customers, including sexual exploitation and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. The overall economic impact on Pattaya, which has over 300,000 hotel rooms, will depend on how personnel choose to spend their time, as some may travel to Bangkok. Thanet Supornsahasrungsi, president of the Association of Chonburi Tourism Federation, noted that the arrival of the US Navy warship has generated hope among local businesses. Lisa Hamilton, president of the Pattaya Nightlife Business Association, expressed that this year has been particularly slow for the area.
