Russia Assists Iran in Developing Supersonic Cruise Missiles

Russia has been providing support for Iranian missile development since 2023, as reported by the Financial Times on September 1, 2026. The initiative, known as C430L, aims to enable Iran to create missiles capable of targeting US Navy aircraft carriers in the Middle East. A key focus of the program is the development of a ramjet propulsion system that would allow these missiles to achieve speeds exceeding that of sound. Such fast, low-flying missiles would reduce the reaction time for Western air defenses, potentially increasing the effectiveness of an attack. The transfer of advanced missile technology is believed to have required high-level political approval in Russia, amid speculation regarding a technology exchange between the two nations. Iran has been involved in supporting Russian drone development, while Russia has been aiding Iranian missile development, alongside existing intelligence cooperation. Leaks reviewed by the Financial Times indicate that preparations for this agreement began before it was finalized in November 2023, shortly after the events of October 7. Nicole Grajewski, a professor at Sciences Po University in Paris, commented, "Russia is trying to broaden the Ukraine war and draw the US into different theatres." The investigation also revealed that Russian support for Iran persisted throughout the war, providing significant assistance during Iranian attacks on Gulf states. Iran has been pursuing the development of a ramjet propulsion system since at least 2019, with reports of testing ramjet prototypes surfacing in August 2023.
