<p>Starmer emphasized the importance of addressing the question of what to do next after serving as prime minister. “Having decided I’m going to concentrate on international affairs, I think it’s right to step down,” he stated.</p>
<p>Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who stood for his first Prime Minister’s Questions on the same day that Starmer stepped down, acknowledged Starmer’s contributions to revitalizing the Labour Party after a decade of challenges leading up to the electoral victory in 2024. “He has given this country a lifetime of public service, particularly for those fighting for justice,” Burnham said. “His leadership took our party from one of its worst defeats to its best victories and created a platform to change this country for the better. We will use it well.”</p>
<p>Starmer’s decision to resign early contrasts with his earlier statements about completing his term in Parliament. This resignation will lead to a by-election for his seat, which the Green Party is keen to contest, as Labour has experienced fluctuating support in recent polls since Starmer's departure from the premiership.</p>
