More than 12% of Democrats believe that Americans focus too much on remembering September 11, according to a YouGov poll released ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks. The survey indicates that 72% of Democrats feel Muslims have been treated worse than individuals of other religions in the United States since the attacks. Nearly 3,000 people died when Islamic terrorists hijacked four passenger planes on September 11, 2001, with two planes crashing into New York’s World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and the fourth in a field in rural Pennsylvania.
When asked about the focus on the memory of the events, 13% of registered Democrats stated that the American people focus too much on September 11, while 19% said they focus too little. In contrast, 43% of Republicans believe that Americans focus too little on the day. The survey also found that 62% of Republicans support making September 11 a national holiday, compared to 43% of Democrats.
Democrats are more likely than Republicans to assert that the 2001 attacks continue to impact the treatment of Muslims in the US, with 71% of Democrats stating that the attacks still affect how Muslims are treated, compared to 42% of Republicans. Additionally, 72% of Democrats believe that Muslims have been treated worse than individuals of other religions since the September 11 attacks, while 28% of Republicans share this view.
On the topic of violent attacks in the US since September 11, 2001, 45% of Democrats attribute the majority of these attacks to right-wing extremists, while only 6% of Republicans agree. Conversely, 26% of Republicans and 2% of Democrats blame left-wing extremists, and 29% of Republicans compared to 14% of Democrats attribute violence to Islamic extremism.
