Teenager Banned from Dating Apps Amid Fraud Case Involving Fake 49ers Player

A teenager accused of assisting a fake San Francisco 49ers player in defrauding women has been prohibited from using dating apps while awaiting trial. Taylor Chan, 18, was arrested on August 24 for allegedly aiding Daejon Love in a conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He was released from custody on August 27 after agreeing to several conditions. Chan is required to comply with laws, surrender his passport, avoid contact with the alleged victims, and refrain from consuming alcohol or narcotic drugs, according to court records. He is also prohibited from using online dating sites, social media applications, or dating applications, as stated in a court filing. Furthermore, Chan cannot possess or use a device with internet access or access the internet without prior permission from the Pretrial Services officer. He is allowed to possess only one cellphone. The conditions are significant, as federal prosecutors allege that Chan and Love met women on apps such as Hinge, Bumble, and Tinder to solicit money. Love allegedly impersonated a wealthy 49ers player, requesting cash for investments, while Chan purportedly acted as his financial advisor to enhance the deception. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon reported that the scheme operated from February 2022 until their arrests at the Boise Airport in Idaho. While Chan is currently released pending trial, Love remains in custody due to being deemed a serious flight risk. Both individuals face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud, with each count carrying a potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison, according to court filings.
