Iran Calls for US to Honor Ceasefire Agreement

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on Tuesday that Tehran would reciprocate any actions by the United States that indicate a return to the interim ceasefire deal, which collapsed in June. Pezeshkian made these remarks during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. He accused the US of failing to uphold its commitments under the agreement, which both sides have claimed the other violated. The US had conducted strikes on Iranian targets following what it described as 'continued aggression' against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, including an incident involving an Iranian drone and a Panama-flagged tanker. Pezeshkian reiterated Iran's position on allowing free navigation through the Strait, but stated it would be under Iran's terms. His comments followed recent exchanges of fire between the US and Iran, with the US striking Iranian forces on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran targeting US forces in the Middle East in response. US President Donald Trump indicated there would be a 'response' to Iranian attacks but clarified that the recent strikes did not signal a return to full-scale war. Pezeshkian is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin later on Tuesday, amid ongoing discussions regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The SCO, which includes members such as India and Pakistan, has been promoted by Russia and China as a counterbalance to Western influence.
