Channel crossings over the summer have reached a six-year low, with nearly 7,000 small-boat arrivals recorded between June and August. The total number of small-boat migrant arrivals fell to 6,949, marking the lowest seasonal figure since 2020. Additionally, the number of boats arriving in Britain has decreased to its lowest level since 2019.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood attributed the decline to increased international cooperation aimed at disrupting the supply chain for people smugglers, which includes boats, lifebelts, and outboard motors. She also highlighted a £662 million agreement with France to enhance beach patrols and implement new interception strategies.
So far this year, a total of 16,391 migrants have crossed from France to the UK, representing a 43 percent decrease compared to the same period last year, and an 18 percent drop from 2024. Mahmood stated, 'This Government is committed to restoring order at our border. This work is beginning to bear fruit, with June, July, and August recording the lowest number of small-boat crossings in seven years. But we know there is more to do.' She emphasized the government's commitment to targeting criminal gangs involved in these crossings and reducing the incentives for unsafe and illegal migration routes.
The issue of small-boat crossings is expected to be a key topic during a meeting between Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron at No 10. The Prime Minister aims to continue the one-in, one-out scheme with France, which is designed to deter crossings.
As of August 30, crossings in August were down 46 percent compared to last year, reaching the lowest level since records began in 2018. July saw the fewest crossings since 2019, with a 64 percent decrease from 2025, while June recorded its lowest level since 2019, down 50 percent from the previous year.
Despite the decrease, Labour's efforts to address the Channel crisis faced criticism after a record 230 migrants arrived on one dinghy on August 10. This number exceeded the capacity of a Boeing 737 jet, leading to criticism of Mahmood's handling of the situation. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp described Labour's attempts as a 'complete laughing stock' and criticized the French authorities for their failure to prevent such large vessels from departing.
French police have launched an investigation following an incident where a migrant was found dead and three others were injured on a small boat that was permitted to continue its journey to the UK. The deceased was identified as a 34-year-old Afghan national who died despite being airlifted to a hospital. A helicopter was used to transport the injured back to France, while the remaining 45 migrants on board were eventually picked up by a British rescue boat. They were part of a larger group of over 500 migrants who reached Britain on Thursday and Friday after a period of adverse weather that had hindered crossings.
