Nepal Flood: Death Toll Exceeds 900, Thousands Missing

Rescue teams are working to reach stranded individuals as nearly 4,800 people remain unaccounted for following the unprecedented flash flood in Nepal and Tibet, which has resulted in over 900 fatalities, according to authorities on Monday. Brigadier General Raja Ram Basnet, spokesperson for the Nepalese army, stated, "We are working in search and rescue of the stranded people from hills, settlements and river areas." Many bodies have been recovered in southern Nepal, far from the areas most affected by the floods that occurred last Wednesday. Reports indicate that some victims are being buried in mass graves, which has raised controversy in Nepal, where cremation is the traditional funeral practice. Authorities in Nepal and China have provided the latest figures. Multiple foreign rescue teams are assisting local authorities in reaching workers trapped in hydropower tunnels in Nepal, with at least 90 individuals reported to be trapped. In India's Uttar Pradesh state, authorities have recovered 17 bodies from rivers that flow from Nepal, believed to be connected to the floods, though these have not been included in the official death toll pending identification. Some scientists suggest that a glacier collapse in the Himalayas may have triggered the disaster, sending significant volumes of water down a river valley. The flood, which carried rock, ice, mud, and debris, swept through areas near the Chinese border, devastating entire towns and damaging hydropower facilities.
