Police have made 169 arrests on the first day of London’s Notting Hill Carnival, with individuals detained for possession of weapons, drugs, and sex offences. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the total number of arrests as of 7:45 PM on Sunday, noting that most occurred within the event's perimeter, while 27 arrests were made on approaches to the site.
The police responded to two knife assaults during the carnival, which is recognized as Europe’s largest street party, involving injuries to a leg and a hand. Neither incident resulted in life-threatening injuries.
The Metropolitan Police had deployed over 7,000 officers for the carnival weekend, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary with live music, parades, street food, and sound stages. Dedicated points for detaining arrested individuals have been established, including a tent on Lancaster Road for those arrested for serious offences. Between 3:30 PM and 5 PM, eight arrests occurred at this location, with common reasons including possession of knives and sexual assault.
In 2025, the police made 528 arrests over the two main days of the carnival, including 167 for drug offences and 50 for possession of an offensive weapon. Previous years saw incidents of stabbings, including a murder in 2024.
Despite the incidents, the Metropolitan Police stated that the overall mood of the carnival has been positive and celebratory. Commander Claire Smart, overseeing the policing operation, noted that proactive measures have led to a reduction in serious violence compared to previous years. She emphasized the importance of ensuring crowd safety and managing the event effectively.
The carnival began with vibrant celebrations, including participants covered in neon paint and traditional costumes representing cultural heritage. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Notting Hill Carnival, with an estimated two million attendees and increased security measures in place, including more than 3,000 stewards.
However, concerns about security risks were raised by Susan Hall, leader of the Conservative group at the London Assembly, who urged the Mayor to address these issues to prevent potential injuries or fatalities.
