Federal Grand Jury Investigates D.C. Public Schools Attendance and Graduation Records

<p>Federal prosecutors have initiated a special grand jury investigation into D.C. public schools, focusing on truancy, graduation rates, and attendance records.</p><p>The investigation, first reported by The Washington Post, is examining the oversight of young people in Washington, D.C., according to sources familiar with the matter.</p><p>A law enforcement official stated that the investigation aims to safeguard youth in the District.</p><p>Teachers and staff at several D.C. Public Schools have been contacted regarding student absences, graduation practices, and attendance documentation, as reported by The Washington Post. At least one individual has testified before the grand jury, with others expected to follow.</p><p>The use of a special grand jury is uncommon; a judge must approve its formation, allowing for a comprehensive investigation that can produce a detailed report, regardless of whether criminal charges are filed.</p><p>A spokesperson for U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office indicated that they could neither confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation.</p><p>The office of D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser stated that its focus remains on the upcoming school year. The mayor’s office emphasized the importance of welcoming students and families back for a strong start to the academic year and reiterated its commitment to publicizing school data.</p><p>According to The Washington Post, senior prosecutor Steven Vandervelden, a key figure in the U.S. attorney’s office, is overseeing the inquiry.</p><p>Pirro has linked school truancy to youth crime and disruptive gatherings in the District. At a May news conference, she mentioned that authorities could take action against teens who repeatedly break curfew or skip school.</p><p>Pirro also expressed interest in obtaining school records for students accused of chronic truancy and curfew violations, noting that the city did not voluntarily provide those records.</p><p>The investigation follows a previous graduation scandal involving Ballou High School, where a 2018 city investigation revealed that diplomas were awarded to students who did not meet attendance requirements or improperly completed coursework. This issue eventually affected several D.C. high schools, with findings indicating that approximately one-third of D.C. students who graduated in 2017 had not fulfilled the necessary requirements for a diploma. District officials later stated that they had tightened enforcement of attendance standards.</p><p>Despite these efforts, absenteeism remains a concern. During the 2023-24 school year, nearly 16,000 D.C. Public Schools students, roughly one-third of K-12 enrollment, were classified as truant after missing at least two weeks of classes without an excuse, according to The Washington Post.</p><p>The special grand jury’s investigation is taking place as D.C.’s school system, which serves over 50,000 students, begins a new academic year.</p><p>Fox News Digital has reached out to the Office of the State Superintendent of Education for comment.</p>
