The European Union (EU) is considering lifting a long-standing ban on aerial pesticide application, allowing the use of drones for more precise spraying. This proposal is part of the EU's Omnibus X legislative package, which aims to simplify food and feed safety regulations and reduce chemical use in agriculture by 50% by 2030. Proponents argue that drones could minimize pesticide use by targeting only affected areas of a field, as opposed to traditional methods that spray large areas.
Currently, aerial pesticide spraying is restricted, with exceptions only for challenging terrains like steep vineyards. The European Council approved the Omnibus X package in May 2026, which includes provisions for drone use.
Thomas Daum, an agricultural economist at the University of Gothenburg, stated that while drones can improve precision in pesticide application, they do not inherently reduce pesticide usage. He noted that the flexibility offered by drones might lead to more frequent applications, potentially increasing overall pesticide use.
The Omnibus X package also aims to reform the approval process for pesticides, which has traditionally required re-evaluation every ten years. Critics, including Carsten Brühl, a biologist at the Rheinland-Pfalz Technical University, have expressed concerns that the new regulations could lead to indefinite approvals for harmful substances, as the review process would be streamlined. They argue that this could undermine environmental safety and public health.
Brühl emphasized the importance of regular assessments of pesticide safety, as current evaluations often do not account for long-term environmental effects or interactions with other chemicals. He advocates for integrated pest management, which prioritizes non-chemical methods of pest control, as a more sustainable approach to agriculture.
The debate continues as the EU moves forward with the Omnibus X package, balancing agricultural efficiency with environmental and health concerns.
