Nepal Issues Flood Alerts as Death Toll Reaches 750

Nepal has issued warnings of further flooding as the death toll from recent flash floods has risen to 750, with over 3,000 individuals still reported missing in the region. Authorities have urged residents in affected districts to remain vigilant following rising water levels in the Bhotekoshi River. On Sunday morning, flood alerts were sent to mobile phones as rescue teams worked to clear a main highway that connects Kathmandu to one of the areas severely impacted by the floods that occurred on Wednesday. The combined death toll in Nepal and China's Tibet region has reached 750, with Nepal's disaster agency reporting 734 deaths and 2,498 people missing. Chinese authorities have confirmed 16 deaths and 546 individuals unaccounted for, which includes over 100 Nepalis and others from various countries. The latest warnings were issued after Chinese authorities notified their Nepali counterparts about increased water flow upstream, according to Dharam Raj Uprety, chief executive of Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. Approximately 93,000 people in Nepal have been affected by the disaster, as reported by the Red Cross. On Saturday, Nepal appealed for international financial assistance and specialized rescue support, including heavy-lift drones, DNA testing kits, and body freezer units. The United States and Canada have pledged about $3.6 million each in humanitarian assistance, while the United Kingdom has committed $6.8 million in aid. The United Nations has released $2.5 million in emergency funding, and the European Union has promised $2.3 million. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has allocated over $1 million and launched an emergency appeal for $31 million. Additionally, Chinese President Xi Jinping has offered assistance from Beijing.
