Olive Branch, Mississippi Mayor Opposes Lowering Flag for Dolly Parton

<p>The mayor of Olive Branch, Mississippi, Ken Adams, has expressed opposition to lowering the flag in honor of Dolly Parton following her death, citing concerns that it would diminish the significance of such gestures in the future.</p><p>In a Facebook post on Friday, Adams stated, "I believe lowering the American flag to half-staff should mean something very significant." He suggested that this honor should be reserved for military heroes, fallen first responders, presidents, and other major national leaders, or events that have had a significant impact on the country.</p><p>Adams remarked, "If we lower the flag every time a well-known or beloved person passes away, I believe we eventually lessen the meaning of the gesture." He acknowledged Parton as a "great person" who has "brought happiness to millions of people and has done tremendous things for others throughout her life," expressing his respect for her.</p><p>Both President Donald Trump and Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves ordered U.S. and state flags to be flown at half-staff for one week following Parton's death at age 80 on Tuesday.</p><p>Adams emphasized that while he respects the decisions made by the President and the Governor, he believes local governments should have the discretion to make their own decisions under home rule. He stated, "I also don’t believe residents elected me to be a ‘salute and execute’ Mayor but to lead with conviction."</p><p>He clarified that his stance was not about disrespecting Parton or engaging in politics, but rather about preserving the honor associated with lowering the flag. Adams stated, "It’s simply my belief that the American flag at half-staff is one of the highest honors we can give, and I believe that honor should be reserved for truly extraordinary circumstances."</p><p>Adams faced criticism in the comments section of his post, with some individuals arguing that Parton’s contributions to children and her philanthropic efforts warranted the honor. One commenter noted, "She did more for children than any politician ever has. That should raise her status in your eyes from ‘just a celebrity.’" Another commenter, identifying as a veteran and first responder, expressed support for lowering the flags for Parton, citing her contributions to the military and various organizations.</p><p>Adams did not clarify whether his statement indicated that the flag would not be lowered in Olive Branch.</p><p>Fox News Digital reached out to Adams’ office for further comment.</p>
