Abdul El-Sayed Addresses Media Questions on Hasan Piker and Relations with Jewish Democrats at Michigan Convention

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed addressed the media during the state Democratic Party Nominating Convention on August 29, 2026. He faced questions regarding his relationship with online personality Hasan Piker and his stance on Israel and Gaza, issues that have created tension between his campaign and some Jewish Democrats. El-Sayed responded to reporters, stating, "We’re in the state of Michigan. If you want to make this race about a streamer in California, I just think you’re missing the boat. This is about affordability in Michigan. This is about seeing a doctor in Michigan. This is about Donald Trump’s disastrous policies in Michigan. That’s what I’m focused on right now." Four reporters inquired about Piker, with whom El-Sayed campaigned during his primary race. He described Piker as "a streamer from California" and expressed disinterest in discussing social media figures. El-Sayed emphasized the importance of addressing relevant political issues in Michigan, stating, "I don’t ever want my comments to hurt anybody’s feelings. It’s important to me that people understand that I take serious the pain of all communities in this state. But I don’t want to have a conversation about a Twitch streamer in California. This is not a serious conversation." Piker has made controversial statements, including remarks about 9/11 and antisemitic comments. El-Sayed also faced scrutiny for comments made in March regarding a violent attack on a Michigan synagogue, which some interpreted as justifying the attack. He later apologized for any misunderstanding, stating, "To anybody who feels like my comments may have been hurtful, I’m really sorry. That was not my intention. We condemned that terrorist attack. We condemned it outright." The convention focused on unity among Michigan Democrats, with other candidates rallying support against former President Donald Trump.
