King Haakon VIII of Norway delivered his first speech to the nation since ascending the throne, paying tribute to his late father, King Harald V, who passed away at the age of 89. In a televised address from the royal palace, Haakon expressed gratitude, stating, "Thank you for being such a good dad," while seated beside a photo of Harald, two lit candles, and a bowl of white roses. Harald, who was regarded as a modernizer during his 35-year reign, died after being treated for a rare blood condition.
Haakon, 53, acknowledged the significant responsibilities ahead of him, stating, "Now it is my turn," and emphasized the importance of being "present and attentive" as he takes on his new role. He highlighted the need for national unity, asserting that the royal family believes in a society based on law and justice, where everyone is valued equally.
The new king remembered his father as a good parent to himself and his sister, Princess Märtha Louise, as well as a loving grandfather and husband. He noted that Saturday would have marked Harald and Queen Sonja's 58th wedding anniversary, and he recalled how Harald brought the family together with a natural authority.
Haakon described the experience of seeing thousands of Norwegians gather outside the royal palace with flowers and tributes as "powerful and moving," stating, "We are in mourning, yet at the same time it brings comfort and strength that so many are grieving together with us."
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre laid flowers outside the palace and signed a book of condolences, stating that the country is "united in grief and gratitude." Haakon is set to swear an oath of allegiance in parliament and participate in a consecration service with his wife, Queen Mette-Marit.
The new king assumes his role amid challenges, including health issues within the royal family and controversies involving family members. Mette-Marit recently underwent a lung transplant and has faced scrutiny over her past friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. Additionally, Haakon's sister, Märtha Louise, has faced criticism for her remarriage and business activities.
Despite these challenges, Haakon emphasized the importance of family unity during difficult times and expressed a commitment to understanding the diverse life situations of the Norwegian people. He acknowledged that while support for the monarchy has declined, royal experts believe he is respected and capable of moving forward.
