Ongoing Conflict Between the U.S. and Iran Lacks Clear Resolution

The United States and Iran are currently engaged in a conflict that has persisted for six months, with neither side presenting a clear strategy for resolution. The situation has resulted in significant casualties and economic hardship for Iran, with thousands reportedly killed due to military strikes and internal repression. Since the conflict began on February 28, over 750 U.S. service members have been injured, and 18 have died. The U.S. is expending substantial resources to secure oil transit through the Strait of Hormuz, though the volume of oil traffic remains below pre-war levels. Efforts at negotiation have stalled, as mutual distrust hampers progress. Experts suggest that Iran aims to inflict enough costs on the U.S. and Israel to deter future attacks. Negar Mortazavi, a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, noted that Iran's approach is shifting towards offensive coercion rather than solely defensive measures. Despite significant losses, Iran retains capabilities for asymmetric warfare, including potential cyberattacks and other operations beyond its borders. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) continues to maintain departments focused on international actions and has previously engaged in attacks against U.S. interests. Colin Clarke from the Soufan Group emphasized the seriousness of potential assassination attempts against U.S. officials, including former President Trump. Any attacks on U.S. personnel would likely provoke retaliatory strikes, although U.S. military planners are aware of their limitations in the region. Iran's missile capabilities remain intact, with experts indicating that the country can sustain a level of missile launches despite efforts to diminish its arsenal. Jeffrey Lewis from the Foreign Policy Research Institute highlighted the challenges in completely eradicating Iran's missile programs, as they can be replenished over time.
