Lando Norris, the reigning Formula One world champion, has signed a contract extension with McLaren that will keep him with the team until 2030. The announcement was made on Saturday, following Norris's recent back-to-back victories at the Dutch Grand Prix, which have bolstered his hopes of defending his world title. The new contract includes an option for a multi-year extension beyond 2030, according to McLaren's statement.
Norris, 26, secured McLaren’s first drivers’ title since Lewis Hamilton in 2008 last season. He joined McLaren’s junior programme at the age of 17 and made his F1 debut in 2019. In a team statement, Norris expressed his satisfaction with the new contract, stating, "McLaren is my home, and I’m very pleased to be signing a new contract to keep me with the team until at least 2030."
He added, "When I started this journey nine years ago, I was clear about the goals I wanted to achieve: to get McLaren back to the front and to win championships. We’ve achieved that goal, but we want more, we want to keep on winning, and we know as a team that we’re capable of achieving it."
Currently, Norris is fourth in the championship standings, trailing Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli by 83 points with 11 races remaining in the season. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, also extended his contract at the beginning of the 2025 season, which is believed to run until at least 2028.
McLaren won constructors’ titles in 2024 and 2025, ending a championship drought that had lasted since 1998. However, the team faced challenges at the start of the current season due to difficulties with the new regulations. Norris's recent successes have demonstrated the potential for further achievements with the improved car.
Team principal Andrea Stella commented on Norris's importance to McLaren, stating, "Lando has been an integral part of McLaren’s journey and success over the last nine years, and we are delighted to continue our partnership with him. He is an exceptional driver, someone who combines outstanding natural speed with maturity, consistency and a strong commitment to McLaren." Stella also noted the strength of the partnership between Norris and Piastri, emphasizing the unity within the team. As a token of appreciation, Norris will receive one of the MCL39 cars he used to win his first F1 title last year.
