Bad Wolves guitarist AJ Rebollo has announced his departure from the band, citing the decision to release a cover of Dolly Parton’s song "Jolene" as a significant factor. Rebollo made the announcement on Instagram on Friday, stating that the release of the cover shortly after Parton's death was the "final nail in the coffin." He accused the band's record label, Better Noise Music, of having "ill intent" in their decision-making. Rebollo expressed that he could no longer remain a member in good faith, criticizing the label for making decisions for the band without their input.
Parton was expected to contribute vocals to the cover, but following her death at age 80, that collaboration was no longer possible. Despite the band's expressed disinterest in releasing the cover after her passing, Better Noise Music plans to proceed with the release on Monday, with proceeds going to Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to children.
Rebollo stated that the band had communicated their lack of interest to the label, feeling that releasing the cover could be perceived as capitalizing on Parton’s death. He also highlighted ongoing issues with the band's business decisions, stating that the pressure and negativity from external sources had taken a toll on the band's morale.
Bad Wolves has faced lineup changes in recent years, including the departure of original singer Tommy Vext in 2021 and other members in subsequent years. The band was also recently dropped from a tour with Christian rock group Skillet following controversy surrounding their new singer, Sara "Killboy" Skinner.
