The lab has been purchasing both authentic and counterfeit cosmetics to analyze their differences. The researcher noted the effort fraudsters put into making counterfeit products appear genuine, making it challenging for consumers to distinguish between them. To address this, the researcher explored whether artificial intelligence (AI) models could assist in identifying counterfeit items.
In a recent study, the researcher photographed three packages of the Rhode Peptide Lip Tint, a product known to be targeted by counterfeiters. Using Google Gemini, the researcher analyzed the images to determine the authenticity of each package. The AI model provided responses regarding potential discrepancies and inconsistencies in the packaging.
For Package A, which was determined to be counterfeit, Gemini identified typographical errors and mismatched distributor information. However, it also made some incorrect assessments based on photographic artifacts. For example, it misidentified glare as a printing error.
In contrast, Package B was also found to be counterfeit, with Gemini noting multiple spelling errors and formatting issues. While some of its observations were correct, others were based on misinterpretations of the images.
The analysis highlights the potential of AI in identifying counterfeit cosmetics, although it also underscores the importance of human expertise in verifying product authenticity. The researcher encourages consumers to be cautious and consider purchasing from official brand websites or authorized retailers to ensure product safety.
