ESPN Commentator Discusses Need for Broader Critique in WNBA

Ryan Ruocco, a play-by-play commentator for both the NBA and WNBA, stated that there needs to be a greater willingness to critique players in the WNBA beyond just Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese for the league to develop further. During an episode of the "Girls Tripp" podcast on August 28, 2026, Ruocco noted that many people feel hesitant to analyze players other than Clark and Reese. He emphasized that for the league to grow, criticism should not be perceived as a personal attack. "People have to be critical of more than just Caitlin Clark," Ruocco said. He added, "Most of the ecosystem feels comfortable being critical about one player, maybe two. Angel would be the other. Everybody else... people are very afraid to say anything bad about even if it’s very small, micro thing. And that’s not real sports." Clark, who was the first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft, and Reese, the No. 7 pick, are recognized as two of the most polarizing players in the league. Both have been named All-Stars each year since joining the league, with Clark winning the WNBA Rookie of the Year award. Their rivalry began during their college careers, particularly highlighted by Reese's gesture during the 2023 national title game, where LSU defeated Iowa. Despite their competitive relationship, both players have stated that their interactions are not personal. They have also become prominent figures in the NIL (name, image, and likeness) era during their time in college.
