<p>California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) will travel to Alabama, South Carolina, and North Carolina next week for a four-day visit, continuing his involvement in Democratic politics outside of California.</p>
<p>This trip to South Carolina, a key state in the Democratic primary calendar, follows the conclusion of the California legislative session. Newsom will visit over 10 counties, including six that President Donald Trump won in 2024, to engage with voters and local leaders while campaigning for Democratic candidates in competitive state House races.</p>
<p>This will be Newsom’s seventh visit to the South in three years, as part of his efforts to enhance Democratic infrastructure and support candidates.</p>
<p>The tour will start on Wednesday in Montgomery, Alabama, where Newsom will focus on civil and voting rights. Activities include walking the civil rights trail, holding a town hall, and meeting with students at Alabama State University.</p>
<p>Newsom's team has framed the trip as a response to perceived declines in voting and civil rights under Trump, citing efforts to restrict mail-in voting and alter congressional maps.</p>
<p>After Alabama, Newsom will spend two days in South Carolina, focusing on rural and traditionally Republican areas. He plans to visit counties that Trump won in 2024, meeting voters and campaigning for Democrats in state House districts.</p>
<p>He will also engage with students at Allen University, a historically Black college, alongside Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jermaine Johnson.</p>
<p>Following South Carolina, Newsom will head to North Carolina for an event with the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party in Charlotte, where he is expected to organize and fundraise before attending a Labor Day weekend rally in Union County, a Republican stronghold.</p>
<p>This trip is part of Newsom’s Campaign for Democracy, launched in 2023, which aims to support Democratic candidates and state parties. His fundraising efforts have raised $15.2 million for Democratic initiatives nationwide, with over $2.2 million directed to Southern Democratic parties.</p>
<p>As Newsom builds his national profile, California groups are increasingly voicing their concerns about his policies, targeting states that may influence his potential presidential campaign in 2028.</p>
<p>Activists have begun to lobby in states where Democratic voters could impact his future, creating a dynamic where unresolved issues in California may have national implications. For instance, transit advocates have taken their concerns about California's climate policies to South Carolina and Nevada, while labor leaders have indicated they will confront Newsom on the campaign trail regarding workplace protections.</p>
<p>Political strategist Matt Klink noted that unresolved issues in California could have national consequences, as groups target states that Newsom may need for a presidential run.</p>
<p>Klink stated, “Every unresolved fight in Sacramento carries a national price tag,” highlighting the efforts of advocacy groups to influence voters in other states.</p>
<p>California’s progressive policies on various issues are expected to be significant in upcoming Democratic primaries, according to Klink.</p>
<p>The situation reflects a unique political dynamic: as Newsom seeks to build a national profile, some of his California critics are following him into the South.</p>
