Walmart's Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter Receives Class I Recall Status Due to Salmonella Risk

Grocery shoppers are advised to avoid certain foods following recent recalls linked to cyclospora. The Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter, sold exclusively at Walmart, has received Class I status from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after an August 3 voluntary recall due to potential Salmonella contamination. The FDA updated the classification on August 26 to indicate the highest risk, suggesting that consumption could lead to serious illness or death. Consumers who possess the affected product are urged to return it for a full refund. Symptoms of Salmonella infection may include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The FDA notes that Salmonella can enter the bloodstream and cause severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis, but this is rare. The Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter was initially recalled on August 3 after Botticelli Foods, the manufacturer, identified a contamination risk. Walmart became aware of the potential contamination on July 17 during a routine inspection by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which found Salmonella in samples from three jars. A total of 16,200 jars were recalled, distributed to Walmart stores in 19 states. The affected product is packaged in 6.7-ounce glass jars with UPC code 194346207961 and lot code LB028ACP04, with an expiration date of January 28, 2027. The butter was manufactured by Gustibus Alimentari Srl of Assoro, Italy, and imported by Botticelli, with exclusive distribution by Walmart.
