Oyo Nyimba, recognized as the world's youngest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 34. The prime minister of Tooro announced his death late on Thursday. Oyo Nyimba became king of the Tooro kingdom in 1995 at the age of 3 following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, Tooro's regional leader, expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV." The cause of death has not been disclosed, and Akiiki mentioned that an official statement regarding funeral and mourning arrangements would be released later.
Uganda operates as a republic with a parliamentary system and a president, Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986. However, the country maintains several traditional monarchies that hold symbolic power and cultural influence. These monarchies were banned after Uganda's independence in 1962 but were reinstated by Museveni in 1993.
Oyo Nyimba was a prominent figure among these monarchs, known for ascending the throne at a young age. Akiiki reassured the public that the continuity of the Crown is assured, mentioning that Oyo leaves behind a Prince as heir, whose identity will be revealed in accordance with Tooro traditions.
Opposition leader Bobi Wine also expressed his condolences online. Oyo was born on April 16, 1992, and was the second child of the late king and Queen Best Kemigisa Kaboyo. He spent part of his education in the UK and faced challenges to his position, including a claim from his cousin in 2015.
Oyo was known for his interest in sports, particularly as a fan of Arsenal Football Club, and was involved in various causes such as HIV prevention and environmental conservation. Prior to his death, reports indicated that he had been seriously ill and was seeking medical treatment in the United States.
