More than 200 additional officers from across the UK have been deployed to assist Cleveland Police after gang violence erupted following a head-on crash that resulted in the deaths of PCs Matthew Blades and Tom Clough, as well as five young men on Saturday.
Police have arrested 17 individuals aged between 18 and 61 in Teesside on various charges, including involvement in an organized crime group. Two men, aged 31 and 23, were arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with a house fire that killed seven-year-old Valentina Foster and her aunt Natalie McDonald, 34, on Wednesday, approximately one mile from the crash site.
In a separate incident, a car rammed into a house in South Bank early yesterday morning, although the property was unoccupied. Authorities are investigating potential links between these incidents and organized crime but have not confirmed any connections.
Several ram raids have occurred in Middlesbrough, including one targeting the father of one of the young men who died in the A66 crash shortly before the incident. Armed police responded to a disturbance in Thornaby, North Yorkshire, last night, where a 25-year-old man was hospitalized with facial fractures. Four individuals were arrested on suspicion of affray, including a 17-year-old boy and two men aged 39 and 43.
Local residents have expressed concerns for their safety. Andy McDonald, the MP for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East, stated that residents feel unsafe even when going to shops and described the situation as unacceptable. He emphasized the need for a strong response to address the violence affecting the community.
Middlesbrough has the highest crime rate in England outside of central London, with rival criminal groups instilling fear among residents. Former mayor Andy Preston remarked that the town is 'on its knees' and warned that ongoing gang feuds could escalate further.
Last night, a group of youths set fire to several cars and ignited fireworks during a vigil for one of the young men who died in the A66 crash. The vigil was held for Michael Cahill, 23, one of the victims. Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as cars were driven erratically and set ablaze, while balloons spelling out 'Michael' were released into the sky.
